The Interplanetary Federation was established in the early 2100s when First Contact with an alien species resulted in peaceful collaboration and coexistence. Over time, it expanded to include several more spacefaring human civilizations such as the Martian Colonies and the Jupiter Orbital Communities, as well as the Oort Cloud Miners and the independent asteroid belt nation of Ceres.
The Interplanetary Federation employs advanced energy sources for its infrastructure and technology, including fusion reactors and space-based solar power. The artificial intelligence systems developed by the Federation's member civilizations manage complex infrastructure and transport networks, making governance and organization across vast interstellar distances possible.
The Interplanetary Federation operates as a liberal democracy with many of its political institutions resembling those of its constituent nations. It has a directly-elected executive branch responsible for managing the day-to-day affairs of the Federation and a representative assembly, made up of representatives from planets, habitats, and organizations, to deliberate and pass legislation.
The Federation emphasizes free trade, enabling the unrestricted flow of goods and services between member civilizations. This promotes interdependence and helps maintain a strong economic foundation. Within the Federation, there are significant cultural differences owing to the varying backgrounds and environments of the different societies. The arts and humanities, however, are highly valued and appreciated across all civilizations, with cultural exchange allowing for a vibrant sharing of ideas and concepts.
The Interplanetary Federation emphasizes collective security, with member civilizations working together for mutual defense and protection against threats like rogue asteroids and hostile alien civilizations. This is facilitated largely by the well-developed defense and intelligence institutions within the Federation. Diplomatic strategy within the Federation also focuses on cooperation on scientific projects, with member civilizations collaboratively working on space exploration and research.
